Charity has been and will always remain a core principle of Freemasonry and we’re proud of our 300+ year history of helping those in need.
Every year, Masons throughout the UK make an important contribution to local, national and global charities by giving their time and money to make a real difference to those in need of support.
It’s why Freemasonry is one of the largest charitable givers in the UK, donating £51.1m to deserving causes in 2020 alone.
Freemasons do not only donate money, they also carry out more than 18.5 million hours of volunteer work in their communities every year.
We’ve made substantial donations across the country to local air ambulances, blood bikes and provide a number of emergency response vehicles, including two super aerial platforms for the London Fire Brigade.
Freemasonry does a huge amount for medical research into treatments for cancer, diabetes, heart disease and a whole range of other conditions, including Alzheimer’s, by funding UK medical scientists to make ground-breaking discoveries.
More recently, money raised has helped to support those at home, such as the Grenfell Tower disaster and those abroad, such as supporting those affected by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine
In Yorkshire, forty different organisations, including youth clubs, food banks, charities and schools received a share of grants totalling £94,000, courtesy of local Freemasons.
Examples of these grants were made to:
- Artizan Café and Creative Space, which received £5,000 towards the replacement of a coffee machine at their Harrogate café
- The Link Community Hub, a community lifeline in East-Sheffield, received £4,900 to fund new kitchen equipment and furnishings
- Fareshare Yorkshire Ltd, Leeds, was awarded £5,000 to help fund a replacement forklift truck
- Leeds Irish Health & Homes, Leeds, was awarded £5,000 to fund food and clothing packs
